Hair Loss Q & A

What is hair loss?

Hair loss can result from certain genes you have, hair treatments, autoimmune conditions, and a range of other possible causes. No matter your reason for hair loss, not everyone is willing to sport a bald look, and you may be searching for treatments that allow you to grow your natural hair again.

Dr. Chacon provides evaluations for hair loss and can recommend or prescribe suitable treatments for your scalp. Current dermatological treatments for hair loss allow many people to grow their own hair rather than accepting the bald spot, getting a hair piece, or even undergoing surgery for follicle implants.

While hair loss treatments don’t work well in every case, Dr. Chacon makes sure you receive the best possible care for hair loss. She makes recommendations based on the type of hair loss you have.

What causes hair loss?

There are medical conditions, medications, and circumstances both inside and outside of your control that can lead to hair loss. Alopecia areata is one example and is an autoimmune disease. Hereditary hair loss, another common example, is strictly related to your genes.

Dr. Chacon explores other possible causes of your hair loss including:

  • Cancer treatments
  • Childbirth
  • Tight hairstyles
  • Harsh chemicals in hair products
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Scalp infections
  • Poisons

In some cases, the solution is as simple as changing medications. Yet, you may need to try multiple treatments before finding one that works well for you.

How is hair loss treated?

Dermatologists use a variety of medications and procedures to treat hair loss by reviving old and nonfunctional follicles. After evaluating you, Dr. Chacon might recommend:

Topical products

Topical medications for your scalp, like minoxidil and finasteride, often lead to restored hair growth. Dr. Chacon evaluates you for side effects and makes sure you’re using your treatment correctly.

Microneedling

Also a treatment for your skin, microneedling helps promote blood flow to your scalp. By creating tiny injuries across your scalp with a needling device, you can regenerate your follicles and may experience natural hair growth as a result.
